When I first started in the computer service and repair industry several years ago, there were only a handful of technology service companies in any given city. Today, there seems to be one on every other street corner. So, how do you find a reputable computer repair business that you can trust to provide you with the best service available?
Here are a few key areas to look at in your research:
Referrals from Your Network - Ask your work colleagues, folks in your social circle or people from your business network if they know of a company they can recommend. Often, you won’t have to loo further than this. People you trust have your best interest in mind and aren’t trying to sell you anything. Their opinion is worth a lot more than a full page color ad in the local phone directory marketing the newest computer repair gig on the block.
Industry Standard Certifications - Most technicians who have a few years of compter repair experience under their belt have invested in getting certified in their area of specialty. Some of the more common certifications are CompTIA A+, Network+ and Server+. There are also skills specific certifications such as the Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MSTS) or Cisco Certified Network Associate Routing & Switching (CCNA). Take the liberty to ask what certifications your potential tech support agent has under their belt, or what their main area of expertise is. If they specialize in Apple products, you might not want them to troubleshoot your Windows Small Business Server installation, or vice-versa.
Remote Repair - Many software related issues can be resolved rather quickly over a remote connection. The tech doesn’t have to drive to your house, and you don’t have to unplug everything and haul the computer down to the shop. It’s a win-win fix and can often save you a fair chunk of money in the process. Most reputable shops provide this service.
Check Pricing - Hiring an IT professional who is self-employed can be a better deal than hiring a large firm with lots of overhead. Ask what the rates are and if there are any additional travel fees for repairing your computer systems onsite. Also, find out if they charge per item or hourly. A skilled technician who is charging hourly is almost always a better arrangement than someone who charges for each itemized task he or she performs on your system.
Location & Trust - In most instances, you want to be within ten miles of your favorite tech support firm. That way, service is prompt and usually doesn’t involve extra mileage charges. Trust is another key issue. When a tech works on your computer, he potentially has access to all your private and personal data. Hire someone who is trustworthy and who can supply references preferably from other local businesses who can vouch for their work.
Warranties - Ensure the firm you are hiring to fix your technology issues can provide a warranty for their work. A common length of time is 30 days, which is usually long enough to figure out if the issue wasn’t corrected.
